Olà Pang! Olà Pong! (terzetto delle maschere) (Turandot)

Olà, Pang! Olà, Pong!
Poiché il funesto gong
desta la reggia e desta la città,
siam pronti ad ogni evento…

Opera: Turandot.
Musica: Giacomo Puccini.
Libretto: Giuseppe Adami, Carlo Simoni.

[Atto II, scena 1]

Testo

Ping
Olà, Pang! Olà, Pong!
Poiché il funesto gong
desta la reggia e desta la città,
siam pronti ad ogni evento:
se lo straniero vince, per le nozze,
e s’egli perde, pel seppellimento.

Pong
Io preparo le nozze!

Pang
Ed io le esequie!

Pong
Le rosse lanterne di festa!

Pang
Le bianche lanterne di lutto!

Pang e Pong
Gli incensi e le offerte…

Pong
Monete di carta dorate…
Il bel palanchino scarlatto!

Pang
Thè, zucchero, noci moscate!
Il feretro, grande, ben fatto!

Pong
I bonzi che cantano…

Pang
I bonzi che gemono…

Pong, Pang
E tutto quanto il resto,
secondo vuole il rito…
minuzioso, … infinito!

Ping
O China, o China,
che or sussulti e trasecoli
inquieta,
come dormivi lieta,
gonfia dei tuoi settantamila secoli!

Ping, Pong, Pang
Tutto andava secondo
l’antichissima regola del mondo.
Poi nacque Turandot…

Ping
E sono anni che le nostre feste
si riducono a gioie come queste: …

Pong
…tre battute di gong, …

Pang
…tre indovinelli, …

Ping
… e giù teste!

Pong
… e giù teste!

Ping
… e giù teste!

Pang
L’anno del topo furon sei.

Pong
L’anno del cane furon otto.

Pang, Ping, Pong
Nell’anno in corso,
il terribile anno della tigre,
siamo già…
al tredicesimo!

Pong, Pang
…tredicesimo,
con quello che va sotto!

Pang, Ping, Pong
Che lavoro!…Che lavoro!…
Che noia!…
A che siamo mai ridotti?
I ministri siam del boia!
Ministri del boia!

Ping
Ho una casa nell’Honan
con il suo laghetto blù
tutto cinto di bambù.
E sto qui a dissiparmi la mia vita,
a stillarmi il cervel sui libri sacri…

Pong, Pang
…sui libri sacri…

Ping
…sui libri sacri!…
E potrei tornar laggiù…

Pang
Tornar laggiù!

Pong
Tornar laggiù!

Ping
…presso il mio laghetto blù!
tutto cinto di bambù!…

Pong
Ho foreste, presso Tsiang,
che più belle non ce n’è,
che non hanno ombra per me.
Ho foreste
che più belle non ce n’è!

Pang
Ho un giardino, presso Kiù,
che lasciai per venir qui
e che non rivedrò,
non rivedrò mai più!…

Ping
… e potrei tornar laggiù
presso mio laghetto blù!
Tutto cinto di bambù!…
E stiam qui…

Pang, Ping, Pong
Stiam qui,
a stillarci il cervel
sui libri sacri!

Pong
E potrei tornare a Tsiang…

Ping
E potrei tornar laggiù…

Pang
E potrei tornare a Kiù…

Ping
… a godermi il lago blù…

Pong
Tsiang…

Pang
Kiù…

Ping
Honan…
…tutto cinto di bambù!

Pong
… e potrei tornare aTsiang!

Pang
… e potrei tornare a Kiù!

Ping, Pong, Pang
O mondo, pieno di pazzi innamorati!
Ne abbiam visti arrivar degli aspiranti!
O quanti, quanti!

Ping
O mondo pieno
di pazzi innamorati!
Vi ricordate il principe
regal di Samarcanda?
Fece la sua domanda,
e lei con quale gioia
gli mandò il boia!

La folla
Ungi, arrota,
che la lama guizzi
e sprizzi fuoco e sangue![1]

Pong
E l’Indiano gemmato Sagarika,
cogli orecchini come campanelli?
Amore chiese, fu decapitato!

Pang
Ed il Birmano?

Pong
E il prence dei Kirghisi?

Pong, Pang
Uccisi! Uccisi!…

Ping
E il Tartaro dall’arco di sei cubiti…
di ricche pelli cinto?

La folla
Ungi, arrota, ecc.

Pong
Estinto!

Pang
Estinto!

La folla
… dove regna Turandot
il lavoro mai non langue!

Pang, Ping, Pong
E decapita… Uccidi…
Uccidi! Estingui! Ammazza!
Addio, amore! addio, razza!
Addio, stirpe divina!
E finisce la China!
Addio, stirpe divina!…

Ping
O tigre! O tigre!

Ping, Pang, Pong
O grande marescialla
del cielo! Fa’ che giunga
la gran notte attesa,
la notte della resa!…

Ping
Il talamo le voglio preparare!

Pong
Sprimaccerò per lei le molli piume!

Pang
Io l’alcova le voglio profumare!

Ping
Gli sposi guiderò reggendo il lume!

Ping, Pong, Pang
Poi tutt’e tre in giardino
noi canterem…

Pong
… canteremo d’amor fino al mattino…

OLÀ, PANG! OLÀ PONG!
English translation

Ping
Hola, Pang! Hola, Pong!
Since the fatal gong is waking
the Palace and walking city,
let’s be ready for any event:
if the stranger wins, for the wedding;
and if he loses, for the burial.

Pong
I’ll prepare the wedding!

Pang
And I, the funeral!

Pong
The red, holiday lanterns!

Pang
The white, mourning lanterns!

Pang and Pong
Incense and sacrifices…

Pong
Gilded coins of paper…
The fine scarlet palanquin!

Pang
Tea, sugar, nutmeg!
The great, well-made bier!

Pong
The singing priests…

Pang
The moaning priests…

Pong, Pang
And all the rest,
as the ceremony requires…
in its infinity of details!

Ping
O China, o China,
who now starts and leaps
restlessly,
how happily you used to sleep
filled with your seventy thousand centuries!

Ping, Pong, Pang
Everything was going along
according to the world’s ancient law.
Then Turandot was born…

Ping
And for years now our holidays
are celebrated with joys of this order:

Pong
…three strokes of the gong,

Pang
…three riddles,

Ping
…and off with the heads!

Pong
and off with the heads!

Ping
…and off with the heads!

Pang
The Year of the Mouse there were six.

Pang
The year of the Dog, eight.

Pang, Ping, Pong
And during the current year,
the terrible Year of the Tiger,
we’ve reached thirteen
already!

Pong, Pang
…thirteen,
counting the one about to go!

Pang, Ping, Pong
What work! What boredom!
What have we become?
We’re the executioner’s Ministers!
The executioner’s Ministers!

Ping
I have a house in Honan
with a little blue lake
all surrounded with bamboo.
And here I am, wasting my life,
wearing out my brain
over the sacred books…

Pong, Pang
over the sacred books…

Ping
…over the sacred books!…
When I could go back there…

Pang
Go back there!

Pong
Go back there!

Ping
…to my little blue lake!
all surrounded with bamboo!

Pong
I have forests, near Tsiang,
the loveliest ever,
but their shade is not for me.
I have forests
the loveliest ever!

Pang
I have a garden near Kiù,
that I left to come here,
that I’ll never see,
I’ll never see again!

Ping
…I could go back there
to my little blue lake!
all surrounded with bamboo!
And here we are…

Pang, Ping, Pong
… here we are,
wearing out our brains
over the sacred books!

Pong
And I could go back to Tsaing…

Ping
And I could go back there…

Pang
And I could go back to Kiù…

Ping
…to enjoy my blue lake…

Pong
Tsiang…

Pang
Kiù…

Ping
Honan…
…all surrounded with bamboo!

Pong
…and I could go back to Tsiang!

Pang
…and I could go back to Kiù!

Ping, Pong, Pang
O world, filled with mad lovers!
We have seen the suitors arriving!
Oh, so many! So many!

Ping
O world, filled
with mad lovers!
Do you remember the regal
Prince of Samakand?
He made his application,
and how joyfully
she sent him the executioner!

The Crowd
Oil and sharpen the blade
till it shines and splatters
fire and blood!

Pong
And the bejewelled Indian Sagarika,
with ear-rings like little bells?
He sought love, and was beheaded!

Pang
And the Burmese?

Pong
And the Prince of the Kirkhiz?

Pong, Pang
Killed! Killed!

Ping
And the Tartar whose bow was six cubits high…
who wore rich skins?

The Crowd
Oil and sharpen, etc.

Pong
Executed!

Pang
Beheaded!

The Crowd
…Where Turandot reigns,
work never is lacking!

Pang, Ping, Pong
Kill…execute…
Slaughter…
Farewell to love! Farewell to our race!
Farewell, divine lineage!
And China comes to an end!
Farewell, divine lineage!

Ping
O tiger!  O tiger!

Ping, Pang, Pong
Great marshal of the sky!
Let come the night
of surrender,
the night we waited so long.

Ping
I want to prepare her marriage bed!

Pong
I will shake up for her the soft feathers!

Pong
I want to perfume her chamber!

Ping
I will lead the bridal pair, holding the lamp!

Ping, Pong, Pang
Then the three of us in the garden
will sing of love…

Pong
…we will sing of love until morning…
