Principessa di morte! (Turandot)

Principessa di morte!…
Principessa di gelo!
Dal tuo tragico cielo
scendi giù sulla terra!…

Opera: Turandot.
Musica: Giacomo Puccini.
Libretto: Giuseppe Adami, Carlo Simoni.

[Atto III, scena 1]

Turandot
Che mai osi, straniero!
Cosa umana non sono…
Son la figlia del cielo…
libera e pura. Tu
stringi il mio freddo velo
ma l’anima è lassù!…

Il principe
La tua anima è in alto!
Ma il tuo corpo è vicino.
Con le mani brucianti
stringerò i lembi d’oro
del tuo manto stellato…
La mia bocca fremente
premerò su di te…

Turandot
Non profanarmi!…

Il principe
Ah! Sentirti viva!…

Turandot
Indietro!…

Il principe
Il gelo tuo è menzogna!

Turandot
Indietro!

Il principe
È menzogna!

Turandot
No! mai nessun m’avrà!

Il principe
Ti voglio mia!

Turandot
Dell’ava lo strazio
non si rinnoverà!
Ah, no!

Il principe
Ti voglio mia!

Turandot
Non mi toccar, straniero! È un sacrilegio!…

Il principe
No!… Il bacio tuo mi dà l’eternità!

Turandot
Sacrilegio!…
Che è mai di me?…
perduta!…

Il principe
Mio fiore!
Oh! Mio fiore mattutino! Mio fiore, ti respiro!
I seni tuoi di giglio,
ah! treman sul mio petto!
Già ti sento
mancare di dolcezza, tutta bianca
nel tuo manto d’argento!

Turandot
Come vincesti?

Il principe
Piangi?

Turandot
È l’alba!…
È l’alba!
Turandot tramonta!

I ragazzi
L’alba! Luce e vita! Tutto è puro!
Principessa, …
Tutto è santo!
Che dolcezza
nel tuo pianto!

Il principe
È l’alba!… E amor nasce col sole!

Turandot
Che nessun mi veda…
La mia gloria è finita!

Il principe
No! Essa incomincia!

Turandot
Onta su me!…

Il principe
Miracolo!
La tua gloria risplende nell’incanto
del primo bacio,
del primo pianto…

Turandot
Del primo pianto… Ah…
Del primo pianto, sì,
straniero, quando sei giunto,
con angoscia ho sentito
il brivido fatale
di questo mal supremo.
Quanti ho visto morire per me!
E li ho spregiati;
ma ho temuto te!
C’era negli occhi tuoi
la luce degli eroi.
C’era negli occhi tuoi
la superba certezza…
E t’ho odiato per quella…
E per quella t’ho amato,
tormentata e divisa
fra due terrori uguali:
vincerti o esser vinta…
E vinta son… Ah! Vinta,

English translation

The prince
Princess of death!
Princess of ice!
Come down to earth
from your tragic heaven!
Ah! Raise that veil…
Look…look, cruel one,
at that purest blood
that was shed for you!

(He rushes to her and tears away her veil.)

Turandot
How do you dare, stranger!
I am not human…
I am the daughter of heaven…
free and pure.
You clasp my cold veil,
but my spirit is there, aloft!…

The prince
Your spirit is on high!
But your body is near.
With burning hands
I’ll clasp the gold border
of your starry cloak…
My trembling mouth
will be pressed on yours…

Turandot
Do not profane me!…

The prince
Ah! To feel you alive!…

Turandot
Stand back!…

The prince
Your iciness is a lie!

Turandot
Stand back!

The prince
It is a lie!

Turandot
No, nobody will ever possess me!

The prince
I want you to be mine!

Turandot
My ancestress’s torment
will not be repeated!
Ah, no!

The prince
I want you to be mine!

Turandot
Dont’ touch me, stranger! It is a sacrilege!…

The prince
No, your kiss gives me eternity!

Turandot
Sacrilege!…
What has become of me?…
I’m lost!…

The prince
My flower!
Oh, my morning flower! My flower, I breathe you in!
Your lily breasts,
ah! they tremble against my chest!
Already I feel you
faint with sweetness, all white
in your silver cloak!

Turandot
How did you win?

The prince
You weep?

Turandot
It’s down!…
It’s down!…
And Turandot fades away!

The children
Dawn! Light and Life! All is pure!
Princess…
All is holy!
What sweetness
in your weeping!…

The prince
It’s dawn!… And Love is born with the sun!

Turandot
No one must see me…
My glory is ended!

The prince
No! It has begun!

Turandot
I am ashamed!

The prince
Miracle!
Your glory shines in the magic
of the first kiss,
of the first tears…

Turandot
Of the first tears…ah!
Of the first tears, yes,
stranger, when you arrived,
with anguish I felt
the fatal shudder
of this great illness.
How many I’ve seen die for me!
And I scorned them;
but I was afraid of you!
In your eyes there was
the light of heroes!
In your eyes there was
the proud self-confidence…
And for that I hated you…
And I loved you for that,
tormented and torn
between two equal fears:
to defeat you or be defeated…
And I am defeated… Ah! Defeated,
not so much by the trial
as by this fever that comes to me from you!

The prince
You’re mine! Mine!

Turandot
This, this is what you sought.
Now you know.
Don’t seek a greater victory…
go, stranger…
with your mystery!

The prince
Mystery? I don’t have it anymore! You’re mine!
You that shiver if I touch you,
You that turn pale if I kiss you,
You can get rid of me if you want it.
I’ll give you my name and my life at the same time.
I’m Calaf, son of Timur!
