Cio-Cio-San entra in scena adesso per la prima volta, accompagnata da un gruppo di fanciulle, le sue amiche. Già prima che il gruppo si possa vedere, si inizia ad udire il tema musicale che le accompagna, un tema composto da Puccini, in cui I fiati, i campanelli e l’arpa creano una melodia luminosa dal sapore orientaleggiante, grazie all’uso del pizzicato e agli abbellimenti dell’arpa. Quando Cio-Cio-San entra in scena, un nuovo tema musicale (Largo) la descrive come una donna innamorata e felice, che ha seguito il ‘richiamo d’amore’; tuttavia nel suo canto viene menzionata già anche la morte, una specie di ‘funesto presagio’ di quello che sarà il suo destino.
Questo tema musicale del ‘richiamo d’amore’ ritornerà poi in vari momenti successivi, per esprimere la sua autentica passione amorosa.
